Mahoning Shadow Trail

The Mahoning Shadow Trail is a scenic 15-mile rails-to-trails project that meanders through the picturesque landscapes of southern Jefferson County. This well-maintained trail follows the historic Pennsylvania Railroad corridor along the Mahoning Creek, offering a serene environment for walking, running, biking, and wildlife observation. Key attractions along the trail include charming bridges, diverse flora and fauna, and the tranquil beauty of the Mahoning Creek. The trail is accessible year-round and features events such as the annual Mahoning Shadow Shuffle, which includes a half-marathon, 10K, and 5K races.

ATV Trails

Piney ATV Trail welcomes both motorized and non-motorized adventurers along its 24 miles of privately owned, multi-use paths. Open to hikers, bikers, ATVs, UTVs, motorcyclists, snowmobiles, and equestrian riders, this trail travels from Brookville to Piney Reservoir on the old Piney Creek Rail bed. The diversity of experiences offered ensures that outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds can explore and appreciate Jefferson County’s rugged beauty at their own pace.

Water Trails

The water trails of Jefferson County provide serene and adventurous escapes for paddlers and nature lovers. The Clarion River meanders through the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors region for 110 miles, offering intermittent riffles, rock outcrops, and diverse wildlife. Little Toby Creek leads paddlers 4.5 miles downstream from the “Trestle Launch” to Little Vineyard Launch, then to where it meets the Clarion River. Mahoning Creek, a tributary of the Allegheny River, flows through Punxsutawney towards Valier, providing access for paddlers and anglers alike. North Fork Creek joins Sandy Lick Creek in Brookville to form Redbank Creek, offering a popular Fish-For-Fun project at Walter Dick Memorial Park. Redbank Creek’s 50 miles provide ample paddling adventures from Brookville westward to the Allegheny River, while Sandy Lick Creek flows near Reynoldsville to join North Fork Creek and create Redbank Creek, completing Jefferson County’s rich network of water trails.

Walking and Hiking Trails

Jefferson County’s hiking and walking trails beckon adventurers with their distinct landscapes and experiences. The Baker Trail spans 140 miles, weaving through forest paths and scenic farmlands across six counties. Tobecco Trail’s 11-mile path links Clear Creek and Cook Forest State Parks along the scenic Clarion River, offering ridge-top views amidst lush landscapes. The 18-mile Clarion-Little Toby Trail, a crushed limestone rail-trail from Brockway to Ridgway, is ideal for hiking, cross-country skiing, and exploring ghost towns. Five Bridges Trail follows Mill Creek for 8.5 miles, offering wetland views and wildlife sightings on the historic railroad route. Mahoning Shadow Trail’s 15-mile journey alonåg the Mahoning Creek Valley features six trailheads for easy exploration. The 51-mile Redbank Valley Trail showcases stone arches, historic bridges, and the Climax Tunnel along Redbank Creek, while Wolf Run Trail’s scenic 4.2 miles offer a delightful experience on the former Pennsylvania Railroad bed.
